what is freedom?

free 02With all this talk about changing laws and such here in the states, I have been thinking a lot about freedom. I’ve been wondering why there are different views on freedom, or liberty, among the U.S. citizens.

How I look at it is that there are two types of people in this world; those who see the word freedom and view it as meaning “freedom from”, and those who see the word and think of it as “freedom to”.

Especially in this day and age we have no set meaning for words. There are so many words that are misused and confused in the American English language (may, can; us, we.) But they are really only misused if you  compare them with older American English or British English. But, as most people now, we have no set language here in the States. Every day there are new words added to the dictionary and definitions are change.

So, you can say one thing and mean one thing, but when you tell seven different people, they can all have different meanings. They would all be right according to the law, but at the same time they would all be wrong according to what you meant.

I imagine this would cause the job of a lawmaker to be difficult. Everyone in the government probably wants the same thing, but because there can be so many definitions for one word, there can be no agreement, freedom can’t be defined, and we don’t know what is going on.

The more I think about this, the more confused I get.

What do you think?
